Meghan Trainor Rocks Perfection in Imperfection!

Perfectionism is often an obstacle for those with ADHD.  It can get in the way of getting started on something- or on finishing it.  It is often the imperfections we focus on and perceive as negative.  What I saw this week was a terrific example of how embracing imperfection can be the best possible choice…

If you saw the Tonight Show episode with Meghan Trainor when she sang “Me Too”, you know she trips and falls pretty badly at the end of the song.  What you may not know is that she chose to air that version of the song despite having been given the opportunity to record the song a 2nd time without falling.

After watching both takes, Meghan liked the quality of her voice better on the first- and felt that the in the 2nd take her face was full of fear as though she was thinking “don’t fall, don’t fall, don’t fall” while she was singing.  She told Jimmy, “I think we should air the one where I fall.” I LOVE that she went with the better performance of the song, despite the fact that choosing that take would also show her “imperfection” when she fell-  on national TV.

When I watched that show back in May, I was impressed with Jimmy Fallon and how he reacted instinctively to her falling with comedy and empathy- by getting on the floor and laying down with her.  It was a powerful moment that immediately made the audience laugh with them, instead of feeling uncomfortable or sorry for Meghan.

This week Meghan returned to The Tonight Show and talked about that experience. When Jimmy commented to her that the song ended up going Platinum, Meghan said, “Yes it did!  Because of that!”

WOW!   What an amazingly literal example of how falling, and accepting your imperfections- while uncomfortable- can be the best way to move forward!  Talk about falling with grace!  Thank you Meghan Trainor for perfectly modeling imperfection!
